Catalogue note
Second issue of The Face, published June 1980, with Paul Weller on the cover photographed by Chalkie Davies. Contents include The Police, Graham Parker, Paul Weller interviewed by Gary Crowley, Sex Pistols / The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle, Joe Jackson, a fashion-oriented hats photo survey, Nine Below Zero and Pete Townshend, while the photographed opening also reproduces Bob Marley by Adrian Boot. As only the second issue, it captures Nick Logan's magazine at the point when its mixture of music, photography, style and youth-culture journalism was still being established.
Why this object matters
The Weller/Crowley interview and hats photo survey show the music-style combination already operating in the second issue. Complete original survival and formative editorial evidence support 8.9 rather than an automatic Gold award for issue two.
Evidence limits: No new physical inspection or collation was performed. Copy-specific conclusions remain limited to the retained catalogue and accession evidence.
Score and assessment method
Archive Importance: 8.9 / 10.
This is a curatorial judgement, not a measurement accurate to one tenth or a market valuation. Read the explanation and its evidence limits together.
