Catalogue note

Original Judge Dredd: The Megazine Vol. 2 #29, dated 29 May–11 June 1993. The issue introduces Missionary Man / Preacher Saul Cain in “Salvation at the Last Chance Saloon,” created by Gordon Rennie and Frank Quitely, and carries a Quitely Missionary Man cover. BARNEY identifies the strip as Quitely’s first Megazine credit, while Gordon Rennie later described the assignment as Quitely’s first mainstream comics work. This copy retains two unusually important original promotional components: the attached double-sided poster and a bound-in Sonic the Comic Free Preview Special, a launch promotional mini-comic circulated around Fleetway titles at the moment Sonic the Comic began publication. The combination preserves both a significant 2000 AD creator/character debut and a cross-title Fleetway publishing promotion.

Writer: John Smith; Igor Goldkind; Gordon Rennie; Alan Grant

Artist: Xuasus; Kevin Cullen; Frank Quitely; Kevin Walker

Cover: Frank Quitely

Edition: Original 1993 first-release issue with original attached double-sided poster and attached Sonic the Comic Free Preview Special

Why this object matters

Quitely’s first Megazine work and Missionary Man’s debut are preserved with the original attached poster and Sonic launch preview. This is an exceptional conjunction of creator history and intact cross-title promotion. Retain Gold at 9.5, distinguishing first Megazine credit from an unsupported first-ever comic credit.

Evidence limits: No new physical inspection or collation was performed. Copy-specific conclusions remain limited to the retained catalogue and accession evidence.
