Catalogue note

The first issue of The Face’s Volume 2 sequence, published immediately after the magazine’s landmark 100th issue. Tim Simenon of Bomb the Bass is photographed by Kevin Davies beneath “THE BRITISH BOMB,” with cover lines for Bomb the Bass, Push, acid jazz and “the new Northern soul.” The issue marks a deliberate editorial reset at a moment when sampling, DJ culture, acid house and new forms of British dance music were moving rapidly from clubs into mainstream youth culture. Its status as Vol. 2 No. 1 makes it a key hinge object between The Face’s first hundred issues and the magazine’s influential late-1980s/early-1990s second phase.

Why this object matters

The Simenon/sampling cover and acid-jazz/Northern-soul contents coincide with the new-volume transition in 1988. This substantive original dance-culture hinge retains Gold at 9.1, not merely because its number resets to one.

Evidence limits: Complete under the standing TMR magazine completeness rule. No missing pages, inserts, supplements or other issued components have been reported; no separate issued extra is evidenced by the supplied photographs.
