Catalogue note

Original Fleetway Editions Judge Dredd: The Megazine Vol. 2 #22, dated 20 February–5 March 1993. This issue opens two consequential serials at once: John Wagner and Peter Doherty’s five-part “Mechanismo Returns”, with Robo-Judge Number Five revealed to be active again, and Alan Grant and Arthur Ranson’s three-part Anderson story “The Jesus Syndrome”. The physical editorial explicitly links the latter forward to the major Anderson saga beginning in issue 27. The issue therefore operates as a double narrative launch within a particularly important stretch of the Megazine, while also carrying continuing Sleeze ’n’ Ryder, Heavy Metal Dredd and Al’s Baby material.

Writer: John Wagner; Garth Ennis; Alan Grant

Artist: Peter Doherty; Nick Percival; Arthur Ranson; John Hicklenton; Keith Page; Carlos Ezquerra

Cover: Peter Doherty

Edition: Original UK fortnightly issue

Why this object matters

The simultaneous Mechanismo Returns and Jesus Syndrome launches make this an outstanding junction in the held Megazine sequence. Neither is the original introduction of its principal character or concept. Reduce to 8.8 and remove Gold while retaining the issue’s substantial narrative importance.

Evidence limits: Selected interior and rear pages are photographed, but no full page-by-page collation has been performed. BARNEY's Megazine free-gift index does not list an issue-specific detachable premium for 2.22, so no known free gift is missing from the supplied copy.
