Biography
Person.
Frank Miller is an American comics writer and artist whose work in the 1980s helped redefine both the visual language of mainstream superhero comics and the cultural position of the graphic novel. After attracting major attention on Marvel’s Daredevil — where he developed the character’s crime-noir atmosphere and co-created Elektra — Miller moved into increasingly ambitious projects including the futuristic Ronin and, in 1986, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns.
That four-part series imagined an ageing Bruce Wayne in a violent, media-saturated America and became one of the defining revisionist superhero works of its period. Miller followed it with Batman: Year One, drawn by David Mazzucchelli, reducing Batman’s origin to a spare urban crime story built around Bruce Wayne and James Gordon; he later created Sin City and 300 and moved into film as screenwriter and director.
